SIDNEY, Neb. — Basketball fundamentals and lessons in faith came together Sunday, Oct. 11, as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted a pop-up mini-clinic for fifth- through eighth-grade students at the Cheyenne County Community Center.

The clinic combined basketball instruction from GymRat Basketball's Trey Winkler with Bible study and discussions about teamwork, personal goals and competing through faith.

FCA Panhandle Area Director Shawn Seiler said the organization, founded in 1956, works to engage, equip and empower coaches and athletes through sports and Christian fellowship.

"They have a theme of playing sports God's way," Seiler said. "What are truths about how God views us and how we compete. There's a great freedom in that. Hopefully, we can teach these kids a little bit about the Bible and God's word and how it applies to their lives."

Winkler led participants through basketball drills emphasizing footwork, dribbling and fundamental skills.

Off the court, Seiler guided discussions about the biblical story of Daniel, personal goals and the importance of being a good teammate.

"Today, we talked about their goals, why they have those goals and how they are as teammates," Seiler said.

FCA operates 16 volunteer-supported huddles throughout the Nebraska Panhandle and offers additional opportunities through camps at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Black Hills State University.

Winkler returns to The Center on Sunday, Oct. 25, for his GymRat Basketball Skills Camp for boys and girls in grades 3-12. Sessions begin at 1 p.m.
