SIDNEY, Neb. — From learning the fundamentals in August to putting those skills into action on the court, more than 50 young athletes took part in the Cheyenne County Community Center's youth volleyball program this fall.

The Center wrapped up its regular youth volleyball league Thursday, Sept. 10, following several weeks of practices and matches for third- through sixth-grade girls.

The season began with skills camps Aug. 15 and Aug. 22 led by Sidney High School volleyball coach Ryan Birner and his players. Serving, passing and learning to use all three touches were among the fundamentals emphasized before league practices and matches began.

Volunteer coach Amber Kerkman, who coached the Points West Community Bank team, said the improvement became evident as the season progressed.

"The league was amazing," Kerkman said. "Huge success, huge turnout. Girls made a lot of progress."

Kerkman volunteered because of her love for volleyball and a desire to share that passion with young athletes. Her daughter also participated in the league.

One of Kerkman's goals was developing confidence in overhand serving, a skill she believes will benefit players as they advance in the sport.

"From the beginning to the end, there was so much progress and confidence," Kerkman said. "That's what you want out of sports: They can actually see their hard work brings results, and hopefully they had fun, too."

For Potter player Allie Stone, the season accomplished that final goal.

"The league was very fun," Stone said. "I think all of us had a good time."

Fifth- and sixth-grade players will continue competing in Saturday matches Sept. 12, Sept. 19, Sept. 26 and Oct. 10 at The Center. Teams from communities across the region will travel to Sidney to compete at The Center, giving local players additional opportunities to develop against new competition.

Kerkman said she hopes to see the league continue growing, including adding more teams from outside Sidney in future seasons.
