SIDNEY, Neb. - Potter-Dix freshmen took their health class outside the classroom Tuesday, Sept. 1, visiting The Training Room in Sidney to learn about fitness opportunities available in their community.

Potter-Dix K-12 physical education teacher Morgan Sonnie arranged the visit as part of a lesson focused on helping students identify ways to remain physically active outside of school.

"Our students are learning about ways that they can be active within their communities," Sonnie said. "I had called Hunter Arterburn asking if we could tour The Training Room, giving them kind of a better scope of what is available within our community."

The Training Room, operated by the Cheyenne County Community Center at 1608 10th Ave., is a 24-hour fitness facility featuring cardio and strength equipment, free weights, plate-loaded and selectorized equipment, a fitness classroom, locker rooms and showers.

The visit allowed students to see equipment and fitness options beyond those currently available at Potter-Dix.

"Giving them more access to things that they can do outside of the school," Sonnie said. "We have a smaller weight room, hoping to expand it in the next couple years."

Sonnie said exposing students to available resources can help build interest in maintaining active lifestyles.

"Kids are just more interested in what they have available to them," she said.

The Training Room serves members ranging from those beginning their fitness journey to experienced athletes pursuing new goals. Membership includes 24/7 access, group fitness classes, towel service and access to both Cheyenne County Community Center fitness locations.
