SIDNEY, Neb. — More than 100 runners and walkers took to Sidney’s Deadwood Trail Saturday morning for the annual Sidney Regional Medical Center Oktoberfest 5K and 10K Run and Walk.
The Oct. 3 event drew 93 participants for the 5K and 20 runners for the 10K. The race began at the Cheyenne County Community Center, followed the Deadwood Trail and finished at the Oktoberfest tent at the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds.
Cassie Haupt and Kaitlyn Frerichs tied for the women’s overall 5K title - both pushing kids in strollers, while Brent Gipfert was the men’s overall winner. Stacy Totherow and Ryan Dollerschell captured the women’s and men’s overall 10K titles, respectively.
“This was the ninth year for the SRMC Ofest Run,” organizer Kristin Narjes, SRMC director of cardiopulmonary services, said. “It was a beautiful morning, a fun family event and a great way to kick-start the Saturday Oktoberfest activities.”
Proceeds from this year’s race will help purchase a ZipThaw system for SRMC’s laboratory. The equipment rapidly warms blood products during medical emergencies.
“Everyone’s miles helped save a life when seconds count,” Narjes said.
Narjes credited volunteers, The Center, the Oktoberfest Committee, Sidney Parks Department and Sidney Public Schools, which provided a bus and driver, for supporting the event.
Age-division winners included Kylynn Gipfert, Walter Childers, AnnLea Gipfert, Porter Anderson, Thyago Matos Junior, Jessie Gipfert, John Haun, Trina Jung, Mark Nelson, Michaela Nelson and Warren Cico in the 5K.
10K division winners were Karsen Blochowitz, Trey Douglas, Meagan Long, Kyle Long, Nathan Goertzen and William Benson.
